Police Back Down, Allow Estonian Gays To March
(Tallinn) Estonia's national police have rescinded their ban on a gay pride march through the center of the capital. Earlier this month police citing security concerns said they would allow the march only to take place in a "secure" area far from the city center. LGBT rights groups in Estonia and several gay members of the European Parliament lobbied the President and Prime Minister to overrule the police. An agreement was finally worked out Monday where gays in the capital would hire security guards to maintain order. The parade, organized by the Estonian Union of Gays and Lesbians, capped a week of pride events in the city that included a small film festival, volleyball tournament and family picnic.

He was 79. Serrault died Sunday of cancer in his home in the northwestern city of Honfleur, Rev. Alain Maillard de La Morandais said. Serrault appeared in more than 130 films during a career that spanned half a century. "I'm against those who only want to entertain," Serrault said in 2002. "I am very happy with all the roles I've played, and I take responsibility for them all."

That's So Gay: First Gay Ad Council Campaign Targets Youth
By year end, the 60-year-old nonprofit Ad Council will launch its first ever public service announcement with a gay message by teaming with GLSEN, the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network, to combat anti-gay language and harassment in schools. The Ad Council has popularized many slogans over the decades, including the World War II message "Loose Lips Sink Ships" and Smokey the Bear, who declared "Only you can prevent forest fires; (both in the 1940s), the United Negro College Fund campaign's "A mind is a terrible thing to waste" in the 1970s, and the 1980s effort "Friends don't let friends drive drunk." It has also introduced iconic characters including the crying American Indian for Keep America Beautiful, McGruff the Crime Dog who began taking "A bite out of crime" in the 1970s, and the Crash Test Dummies to encourage safety belt usage in the 1980s. Located in New York and Washington, DC, the Ad Council pairs nonprofit organizations with ad agencies that volunteer to create public service advertising about common major problems, then works with major media outlets to commit to running the ads for free. New York City-based GLSEN, which was founded as a local group in 1990 and went national in 1995, helped start a national phenomenon of gay-straight alliances in schools and was created to support students and teachers around gay issues.
